Hip Hop one of the biggest music genres in the world was created in 1973 in the Bronx, New York by founding member Dj Kool Herc. Since the birth of Hip Hop and its culture, we have credited many greats for their contribution to the genre. From Dj Hollywood teaching rappers how to spit tight rhymes over beats to rapper Kurtis Blow being the first rapper to sign to a major record label(Mercury). We have literally witnessed the birth of a culture that has reinvented itself time after time again.
After many inspiring and historic moments, Hip Hop has taken it's closed or gated community of members and opened it for a more exclusive approach. The Hip Hop community has now expanded in ways I'm sure most wouldn't have expected. From clothes to movies, we have coined the phrase" For The Culture" by literally creating the culture. We took what was the norm behind community closed doors and gave the public a sneak peek into the lives of black families across the nation. We let a system that hasn't been so friendly to us as a community not only profit off of us but also diminish its greatness.
Literally, 50 years ago we birthed a monetizing business and to be honest I still don't think we realize how much we've contributed to America. Now we're in 2023 and looking for a way to take back what we've given this country. We're now owning the rights to not only the music we've produced but also the culture we've created. Hip Hop now has a chance to create a world that signifies the mission we once had. The mission is to create art and sustain a decent free living. All any artist ever wants is to make a living off of their view of life which is ultimately the story they wish to share with us.
How has the Hip Hop culture changed since 1973?
Hip-hop culture has undergone significant changes since its inception in 1973. Some of the notable changes include the emergence of new sub-genres, increased commercialization, globalization, and social media's impact on the culture's dissemination. Additionally, hip-hop has become more inclusive and diverse, with more representation of women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people from different cultural backgrounds.
We created the culture so we can change the culture however we see fit. We now have more power in the freedom of speech through our marketing and promotional tactics. Imagine a community that uplifts and rebuilds what was once torn down. We've escaped the shackles of restraint and criticism and forced America to not only include us but credit us for our contributions to this nation. I think this is what Nas and Jay-z fought for and this is why we have to protect it. We have to take whatever was restricted from us and create timeless yet exclusive moments.
WILL THE NEW HIP-HOP PLEASE STAND UP?
